Alstom Belgium
TLDR
Alstom Belgium is the Belgian arm of French rail group Alstom, with a major signalling and traction R&D hub in Charleroi that serves as one of the group's global centres of excellence for ERTMS.
Overview
Alstom Belgium is the local subsidiary of Paris-listed Alstom, the French rail manufacturer and signalling specialist. The Belgian operation traces its roots in Charleroi back more than a century through legacy firms in electrical and rail engineering. Today the Charleroi site employs around 1,050 people, of whom roughly 500 are engineers, with additional Belgian sites in Bruges and a renovation depot in Fleurus.
The Charleroi campus hosts two centres of excellence for the wider Alstom group. The first is a Development Center for ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) signalling for railway mainlines, with around 200 system engineers, embedded software experts, and verification and validation engineers. The second is a Components Development Site focused on traction systems, auxiliary power supply for onboard rail applications, and energy recovery solutions for urban networks. The site has roughly 100 dedicated research engineers. Alstom's latest ETCS technology is being deployed on 120 SNCB locomotives, with engineering led from Charleroi.
Alstom Belgium also executes maintenance contracts for tramways, locomotives, and signalling equipment from the Charleroi and Bruges sites. The Belgian organisation is included in the wiki because of its substantial in-country engineering footprint rather than a Belgian headquarters: the parent group is headquartered in Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine, France.
