TLDR

Tim Vandecasteele co-founded Silverfin in 2013 with Joris Van Der Gucht, built it to EUR 37M ARR across 15 countries, and stayed as CPO until the acquisition by Visma in 2023, after which he co-founded Blackfin Ventures.

Overview

Tim Vandecasteele is one half of the founding team behind Silverfin, Ghent's cloud accounting platform for accountants and financial service firms. Before Silverfin, Tim worked as a software developer at Philips and at Vasco Data Security, building a technical foundation in enterprise software.

Tim and Joris Van Der Gucht co-founded Silverfin in January 2013 in Ghent. Tim led product, technology, support, and customer success for the first nine years as co-CEO, then shifted focus to product and support for the final two years before exit. Silverfin raised a Series B led by Hg Capital in 2020, and Visma acquired the company in 2023 at a point where it was generating EUR 37M+ in ARR, operating in 15 countries, and serving more than 350,000 end clients.

After the exit, Tim co-founded Blackfin Ventures, a new investment vehicle focused on the next generation of Belgian and European SaaS startups. He has also founded "die van de boekhouding" as an additional post-exit venture.

Career History

  • Co-Founder at Blackfin Ventures (2024 - present), early-stage SaaS investor
  • Founder at die van de boekhouding (current)
  • Co-Founder & Co-CEO / CPO at Silverfin (2013 - 2023), cloud accounting platform acquired by Visma 2023
  • Software Developer at Vasco Data Security
  • Software Developer at Philips

Connections

Very closely connected to Joris Van Der Gucht (Silverfin co-founder), the Hg Capital investment team, and the broader Ghent SaaS founder network. The Silverfin exit created a new investment node with Blackfin Ventures.

About

Tim is a technical founder who stayed hands-on with product throughout Silverfin's entire growth arc. His willingness to stay as CPO post-CEO transition and see the company through to a clean exit is notable in a landscape where founders often exit early.

Notes

Silverfin's acquisition by Visma in 2023 is one of the cleanest Belgian SaaS exits of the decade. Tim's post-exit move into investing mirrors the broader pattern of Flemish operator-turned-investor.
