The use of physics-based simulations like FEA and CFD has come a long way in the medical device industry. In many companies, simulations are used at different stages of the development process: from initial concept exploration to design optimization and V&V. Some even use patient-specific models to test their designs.
But I don't think we have reached the full potential yet.
A key challenge is that a lot of manual work is still required when setting up simulations and analysing results. Changing design parameters often means repeating tasks in a UI, such as re-selecting surfaces and re-meshing, particularly when topological changes occur.
This has two consequences:
• Development cycles are slower than they should be.
• Only a limited number of design variants are explored, meaning the true optimum may not be found.
Why not invest early on in fully automated simulation workflows?
Engineers can then focus on engineering decisions rather than repetitive clicking in GUIs.
The impact will be felt throughout many phases of development.
Early on, you can evaluate hundreds of design variants. Imagine spending 2 hours of manual work per simulation (set-up + post-processing). 2 hours × 100 variants = 5 weeks of manual work. But the impact is broader than that. The same automation makes sensitivity analyses painless, streamlines V&V activities such as uncertainty quantification, and creates long-term value. Because the year after, you may need to work on additional sizes. Then comes the next-generation device... And it will be easier to transfer knowledge.
At HelloTriangle, we help our customers unlock the true potential of simulation-driven design. The video below shows how both geometric and mesh-related parameters can be modified by adjusting just a few parameters in a script. Let me know if you're interested in learning more.
