We work with a lot of organisations that have completed their annual security training. Completion rates are high. Incidents involving human errors are, you guessed it, also high.
If the lack of training isnโt the problem, perhaps the ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ๐บ๐ฎ๐ is.
Clicking through slides once a year teaches people that security is a ๐ฐ๐ผ๐บ๐ฝ๐น๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ task. It does not, however, build the ๐ถ๐ป๐๐๐ถ๐ป๐ฐ๐ to pause before clicking a link or question an unusual request.
What works better is ๐๐บ๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ฟ, ๐บ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ณ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐พ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐บ๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐.
A simulated phishing email followed by a conversation (not a lecture). A team discussion about a real incident.
A process that makes it easy to report something suspicious without feeling embarrassed.
Security awareness becomes useful when it is acknowledged AND practised.
