When is the last time you ordered something online, and the box wasn't five times bigger than the product itself? ๐ฆ
If youโve ever ordered something small online and had it shipped, chances are that you received a big cardboard box filled mostly with plastic air cushions. And that generates waste. Lots of it.
That is why the European Union introduced the ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ธ๐ฎ๐ด๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ธ๐ฎ๐ด๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ช๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ด๐๐น๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป (๐ฃ๐ฃ๐ช๐ฅ). It will be great for reducing our mountain of waste, but itโs going to change how we handle packaging:
๐ Strict restrictions on shipping tiny items in oversized cardboard boxes.
๐ A total ban on certain single-use plastics, like individual condiment and sauce packets.
๐ Severe restrictions on substances of concern, including PFAS chemicals in food packaging.
๐ Mandatory targets for recyclable packaging designs and minimum recycled content.
The commercial bans on oversized boxes and single-use plastic sachets don't hit until 2030, but the strict data requirements go live this August. ๐๐ฟ๐ผ๐บ ๐๐๐ด๐๐๐ ๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐ต, you cannot legally place packaging on the market without a full audit trail. This includes a mandatory Declaration of Conformity and strict proof that chemical thresholds (like PFAS in food packaging) are met.
This shifts a packaging problem into an immediate ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐๐ฎ ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ป๐ด๐ฒ. We often talk to manufacturers who realise they have almost no visibility into the chemical compositions or raw materials their suppliers use. And with documentation audits coming into effect, relying on assumptions or vague supplier promises is a massive risk.
