Synthetic datasets are increasingly used to unlock health research without exposing real patient records. But most generation methods are evaluated in isolation, making it hard to know which approach actually fits a given use case.
This week's #interetsingread looks at ๐๐๐ข๐ฉ๐๐ฅ, a new open-source Python library that benchmarks synthetic data generators side by side, covering statistical methods (SMOTE, Synthpop), GAN-based approaches (CTGAN, CTABGAN+), and more, tested with and without differential privacy (DP).
Using real data, the team found a clear utility-privacy tradeoff when DP wasn't applied, but adding DP leveled the privacy playing field across generators, enabling fairer comparisons. Crucially: no single method won across the board. The ๐๐๐จ๐ฉ generator depends entirely on what you're optimizing for.
