🚺 Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is often described as a men's disease. That framing is doing real damage to women.
📉 The gap opens long before the operating room. A meta-analysis found that 34% of women assessed for aneurysm repair were morphologically eligible for EVAR within manufacturers' instructions for use, compared with 54% of men. And of those eligible for intervention, 34% of women went untreated versus 19% of men.
🩺 The reason is anatomy. A 2025 study found that even after propensity matching for age, cardiovascular risk and body size, women with AAA show distinct vascular morphology that adversely affects EVAR suitability.
⚠️ And the stakes are not symmetric. In an individual patient meta-analysis of 15,475 people, #rupture #rates were almost #fourfold #higher in #women than in men, and the authors concluded that a lower intervention threshold for women may be justified.
🔧 The study named the fix directly, and it was not a guideline change: It was the development of #low #profile, durable stent grafts and strategies targeting hostile neck anatomy. Device design is the bottleneck.
🧵 That is the problem we are working on at #Aortex. Our goal is a thinner graft wall, and with it a smaller delivery profile and better conformability in the seal zone. The anatomy that currently falls outside the IFU is the anatomy we are designing for.
