In the larger companies we work with, energy has an owner. There is an energy manager, a dashboard, and often the sharpest set of numbers in the room.
What is often missing is a lever that moves at the speed of the market.
The decision that sets the cost was made on a price per unit. One number, agreed once, fixed for a term.
That structure made sense when energy was a price you were quoted, and the only real question was when to sign. It outlived the moment when energy stopped being that.
A year of consumption at one industrial site is 35,040 quarter hours, each with its own cost. Most of the decisions around it are still made against a single number, once every three years.
For every company we assess, we lay their consumption over that same curve, quarter by quarter. The two rarely have much to do with each other. Not because anyone decided badly - the price was never a variable in the plan.
Fixing a price for twenty years settles the term. Deciding inside each of those 35,040 quarter hours, for twenty years, settles the shape. Those are two different purchases.
The energy managers who come to us usually see this before anyone else in their building. What they are looking for is an instrument that works at the resolution the market moves at.
