Once you see it, you can’t unsee it - a story with a smoking gun.
People sometimes imagine that the most interesting blockchain work is all about chasing darknet flows, hacks, or sanctioned wallets.
But sometimes the real smoking gun can still be found somewhere else: after the crime, during the Enhanced DD of an off-ramping client, by looking at the way the wealth was created.
In one case, a client wanted to off-ramp proceeds from a meme coin through a financial institution.
At first glance, the money movements alone did not look extraordinary, and our automated Blockchain Analysis Tools check showed no alerts.
But when we shifted the focus from where the money moved to how the wealth was made, the picture changed completely.
What we found this way was this:
- the client received a controlling stake in a meme coin (due to last-minute protocol manipulation)
- the tokens were immediately distributed across 7 other wallets
- the trading pattern showed a price pump (BUY,BUY,BUY NOW!)..
- ..followed by programmatic selling (slow SELL each hour not to crash the price, while paid influencers are bringing more buyers)
- significant profit was made on all 7 wallets the proceeds then started moving in small amounts frantically across multiple wallets and exchanges (layering)
- the token price slowly collapsed
- The client tried to off-ramp to a traditional financial institution via a fiat transfer from one of the exchanges they used.
Do you see how the story changed when you focus on the right thing?
The smoking gun was not at all a dramatic single transfer that a simple blockchain flow analysis labels make scream: “crime!”.
The wealth creation pattern itself revealed the scheme.
It is finally about going back to the basics and asking a very common-sense question:
“How was this fortune made so quickly in the first place?”
That is often where the real story begins.
