60% of US small businesses, some 20 million companies, now run on SaaS platforms (Stripe). That distribution is why every vertical software company is being pitched embedded finance, and why it pays to know what the term actually covers.
A non-financial brand offers the product as part of its own proposition
ย โข It sits inside the existing customer journey rather than sending the customer into a separate financial-services journey
ย โข It originates a new financial relationship for that customer rather than pointing at one they already hold
Two things commonly sold as embedded finance fail it. A co-branded credit card fails the second part, because the customer applies separately and then manages the card in a separate account. An open banking connection fails the third, because it reads an account the customer already has.
The third part concerns the customer relationship rather than who holds the licence. Toast Capital loans are issued by WebBank, with Toast marketing and servicing them. Square went the other way, bringing origination in-house in 2021 and now issuing Square Loans through Square Financial Services, its own Utah-chartered industrial bank. Both count, because in both cases the customer ends up with a facility they did not have before, inside software they already use.
The licence still matters, but for scoping rather than for definition. Five products can be embedded: payments, banking, lending, investment and insurance. Each has its own regulatory requirements, so a roadmap that says embedded finance when it means embedded banking gets costed against the wrong number.
Past the terminology, the definition decides two things.
๐จ๐ป๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด. Originate the credit and you assess repayment capacity from invoices and order flow you already process. Refer the customer out and the lender underwrites from its own sources, so your data advantage goes unused.
๐ฅ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป. ServiceTitan, whose platform carries payments and payroll alongside the software, has reported gross dollar retention above 95% for four consecutive fiscal years, FY2023 through FY2026. Once payments and payroll run through the platform, switching means re-plumbing operations rather than swapping software.
Full definition and the product framework are in the report. Link in comments.
