Painting the inside of a truck white is not a transformation initiative.
Nobody puts that in a plan. Nobody approves a budget for it.
But it is one of the things Dave Brailsford's team did at British Cycling, so that dust which could affect the bikes was easier to spot.
They also changed the bike seats. They worked out what riders slept on and moved the same mattresses between hotels so athletes slept consistently.
For almost 100 years before that, British cyclists had won a single Olympic gold medal.
None of those changes was transformational on its own. That was the point.
Here is what I take from it.
The improvements that actually move a system are rarely the ones big enough to build a transformation programme around. They are small, specific, and you only find them by looking closely at the system you already have.
If you are being asked to change everything at once, this is the argument for the other approach.
