Laurent Janssens raises a governance question that deserves a permanent place in the quarterly board review: not only *what value will AI create?*, but also *where does the financial and contractual risk behind the infrastructure ultimately sit?*
Boards do not need to become credit analysts or AI engineers. They do need a disciplined quarterly view of four things:
- Are our priority AI use cases delivering measurable value against a clear baseline?
- How concentrated are we around a cloud provider, model provider, data centre or strategic partner?
- What commitments sit behind our AI and compute usage: minimum spend, renewals, indexation, termination costs and exit clauses?
- Which early-warning signals would force a management or board response?
The practical answer is a single integrated dashboard covering value creation, operational dependency, contractual exposure and AI risk/compliance — with a named executive owner, agreed thresholds and predetermined actions for every red or amber item.
The purpose is not to predict a market correction. It is to ensure the organisation knows its exposure before external conditions make the decision for it.
AI ambition requires more than technology conviction. It requires financial resilience, contractual flexibility and governance disciplined enough to act on early signals.
Worth reading for directors, investors and executives moving AI beyond experimentation.
