1. Autonomous drone delivery becomes an integrated Uber Eats capability involving Uber and Zipline
Uber and Zipline are preparing to introduce autonomous drone delivery through Uber Eats in the United States. Uber is also making a strategic investment in Zipline. This connects drone autonomy directly to an established large-scale consumer platform and a commercial delivery service. The partnership provides for further geographic expansion after initial services are launched.
2. Autonomy software becomes less dependent on specific drone models through Palladyne AI and Orkid Tech
Palladyne AI and Orkid Tech are integrating Palladyne Pilot and SwarmOS into Orkid Tech's fixed-wing VTOL drones. This is Palladyne AI's first fixed-wing UAV partnership and extends the same autonomy software into a new aircraft class. The integrated systems are intended for U.S. defense applications and commercial operations in oil and gas, power infrastructure, wildfire management and public safety.
3. Different drone platforms can operate autonomously together through Palladyne AI, Anduril and the U.S. Army
Palladyne AI connected SwarmOS with Anduril's Lattice during Project Convergence Capstone 6 and demonstrated autonomous operations involving multiple drones from different vendors. This supports an architecture in which collaborative autonomy does not have to remain tied to a single drone manufacturer. Palladyne AI also positions its autonomy stack for distributed tasking, degraded communications and coordination across multiple operational domains.
4. GPS-denied autonomy becomes a standalone platform through Emesent, the Australian Government, QUT and EPE
Emesent is developing and commercializing Cortex AI with an AUD 3 million grant from Australia's CRC-P program. The open, modular platform is designed to enable robots and vehicles to navigate, map and operate autonomously without GPS. A working prototype is already deployed with more than a dozen early adopters across defense, mining and the built environment and has been integrated into drones, ground robots and heavy vehicles. This enables robotics companies and OEMs to integrate Emesent's existing GPS-denied autonomy technology into their own platforms.
5. NATO builds drone autonomy around human control of lethal decisions involving NATO and its member states
Under the Eastern Flank Deterrence Initiative, NATO is combining drones, sensors, AI, satellites and member-state systems within a connected architecture. AI can automate parts of surveillance, flight and threat detection, while human operators retain responsibility for decisions involving strikes.
