𝗔𝗜 𝗨𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝟯𝗗 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗡𝗔𝗦𝗔 𝗥𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘆 Researchers at Washington State University have developed an AI-guided framework to 3D-print GRCop-42—a high-performance copper-chromium-niobium alloy developed by NASA for rocket combustion chambers—using standard commercial 3D printers. 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 Historically, over 90% of commercial printers could not process GRCop-42 due to high laser power demands and energy costs. Testing across 100 million possible parameter combinations was previously cost-prohibitive. Starting from 37 initial failed attempts, the WSU team's active learning AI model identified six successful printing configurations out of just 40 trials, achieving successful prints at lower 500-watt power levels. 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 Awarded at the AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence, this methodology dramatically lowers manufacturing costs while opening high-performance alloy fabrication to universities and smaller laboratories.
