On World Lake Day, we celebrate the vital role lakes play in sustaining freshwater supplies, biodiversity, climate resilience, and local communities. But these ecosystems face growing pressure from pollution, climate change, urbanisation, and changing land use. At VITO, experts across research domains combine complementary technologies to help monitor, understand, and protect lakes and other surface waters: 🛰️ 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘃𝗲 We transform satellite, airborne, and drone data into actionable information on water quality, pollution, and environmental change. Through the Capitan Taki project, for example, we supported climate-resilient water management for Lake Tanganyika and Lake Kivu by combining Earth observation, in-situ measurements, data science, and local capacity building. 💧 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 Our Water Emission Inventory Support System (WEISS) maps pollution sources and models the routes pollutants follow towards surface waters. These spatial insights help authorities assess pressures, evaluate measures, and identify where action can have the greatest impact.
