TLDR

Accountable is a Brussels-based tax and accounting app for freelancers that automates VAT declarations, social contributions, and expense tracking across Belgium and Germany.

Overview

Founded in 2017 by Nicolas Quarre, Hassan Ayed, and Alexis Eggermont, Accountable was born from the founders' conviction that self-employed workers deserved a consumer-grade financial management experience, free from the complexity of legacy accounting software and advisors. Nicolas Quarre had previously co-founded RIAKTR (Real Impact Analytics), a B2B analytics firm serving mobile operators across Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East.

The app covers bookkeeping, invoicing, expense tracking, and tax filing in a single mobile-first interface. It targets Belgium and Germany, two markets with notoriously complex self-employment tax regimes. By 2024, Accountable had over 26,000 clients across both countries.

In April 2025, Norwegian software group Visma acquired a minority stake in Accountable, with plans for a full acquisition at a later date. Visma cited Accountable's strong product and the growing regulatory pressure around electronic invoicing in Belgium and Germany as key drivers. The deal is Visma's fifteenth acquisition in Belgium.
