Can we steer AI and digital innovation toward measurable public value while maintaining enterprise competitiveness? This was the central challenge at the With Purpose Summit, recently hosted by the Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) in Shenzhen. The conversation went far beyond raw technical capabilities, focusing instead on how to align rapid technological progress with inclusive societal progress and global resilience. Representing Re-Imagine Europa, our Chairwoman Maria João Rodrigues EU and CEO Erika Staël von Holstein joined global leaders to address the shifting landscape of global governance, cross-border cooperation, and the merging of economic growth with social goals. A major highlight was the panel on “Sustainability Digital Transformation as a Driver of Sustainable Growth: Cooperation between China and the European Union.” Rodrigues and Staël von Holstein were joined by Hongyu (Harris) Fu, Director of the AI Governance Center at the Alibaba Group Research Institute, to explore how both regions can make digitalization and sustainability reinforce one another rather than compete. The summit also served as the launchpad for the Global AI Impact Network (GAIN)—a joint initiative co-launched by Re-Imagine Europa and GeSI. GAIN connects policymakers, industry executives, researchers, and civil society advocates to: 1️⃣ Balance market competitiveness with institutional responsibility. 2️⃣ Map the diverse narratives shaping today’s AI debate to build public trust. 3️⃣ Define concrete, sustainable pathways for global AI governance.
