Using eye-tracking and a ball-interception task, we found that participants' cognitive load peaked sharply around 2 seconds after stimulus onset and was correlated with learning rates (*r* = 0.31 / p< .001). Crucially, optimal learning was defined by a high load spike that recovered to baseline, while poor performance was marked by a sustained, elevated load that never came back down.
Interestingly, this pattern held even when comparing the top and bottom 10% of trials: the highest learning rates showed strong phasic CL responses, whereas the highest errors showed elevated tonic CL throughout.
These findings have implications beyond athletics - from surgical training to pilot instruction to classroom education, real-time cognitive load monitoring provides a task-independent window into the learning process itself.
