As eye tracking becomes increasingly integrated into consumer devices
such as augmented reality headsets and smartglasses, it offers the potential to establish wearable sensing for cognitive health in much the same way that cardiac sensing has transformed the monitoring of physical health.
The results presented in this work represent an initial step toward a broader vision of continuous cognitive health monitoring.
Over the course of one month, together with our partner Hogrefe Verlag GmbH & Co. KG we had 29 participants visiting the laboratory at the Medical University of Vienna once a week. During each laboratory visit, participants wore mobile eye tracking glasses for four hours while engaging in naturalistic activities, including playing board games, reading, and socializing.
Today we are happy to share our first findings that suggest that latent cognitive health could be meaningfully estimated from the cognitive test outcomes. With further research, a model of cognitive health based on naturalistic eye tracking data could support the early identification of subtle cognitive changes and complement existing approaches for assessing cognitive decline.
