What role can biomethane play in the energy transition? Over the past year, Jan Bos took part in the ‘Lerend Netwerk Biomethaan’ initiative, organised by Biogas-E. A valuable opportunity to exchange insights on the opportunities, challenges and practical realities of biomethane in Belgium. Because biomethane is part of a broader circular value chain. Next to the production of renewable gas, topics such as digestate use, nutrient recovery, certification and regulation also play an important role. Electrification will play a major role in the energy transition. But not every industrial process, heating system or heavy-duty application can be electrified easily, quickly or cost-effectively. 👉 That's where biomethane comes in. Biomethane is one of the ways to decarbonise our energy system without having to replace existing gas infrastructure. The interesting part: biomethane and natural gas are chemically identical. Both are methane (CH₄). So why is biomethane attracting attention? 💨 It can help reduce dependence on fossil fuels ♻️ It gives organic waste streams a second life 🔌 It complements electrification where direct electrification is difficult or expensive 🏭 It allows industries to reduce their fossil footprint without completely redesigning their processes Of course, the sustainability story is more complex than simply calling it “green gas”. The actual environmental impact depends on factors such as feedstock selection, production methods and certification throughout the value chain. At Aquafin NV’s wastewater treatment plant in Ghent, we worked on a project where biogas from sludge digestion is upgraded to biomethane and injected into the gas grid. The project also combines this with heat recovery from treated wastewater, creating a circular energy solution from an existing wastewater treatment process.
