How can we keep water available for the moments when it is needed most? š„µ
One technology that can help is Aquifer Storage & Recovery (or simply: ASR).
This technology uses the underground as a temporary water buffer. Treated or naturally clean water is stored in a suitable aquifer during wet periods and recovered when demand increases.
The principle may sound simple, but applying it safely requires careful research:
āļø the water must be treated to the right quality
āļø the aquifer must be suitable
āļø and the interaction between the injected water, the soil and the existing groundwater must be closely monitored
At Nuoro, we see significant potential in #ASR as part of a broader water resilience strategy. We are actively helping to investigate and scale the technology through projects such as Keiberg Vossem, where treated rainwater can be stored underground, and WPC Hofstade, where ASR is being studied alongside advanced water reuse.
In our latest blog, we explain how ASR works, where it can add value and why water treatment, pilot testing and monitoring are essential before the technology can be scaled up.
