We're starting a new content series exploring the qualities of air! Let's talk about the unique qualities of CO2. CO2 really only builds up in places where there's no ventilation or introduction of fresh air. When fresh air is moving through, CO2 dilutes very quickly and very easily. That's why in the outdoors it's very hard for CO2 to accumulate - and the fact that global background CO2 is rising anyway actually signals a much larger, more sinister problem - but that's a topic for another day. The fact that it dilutes so easily is ultimately why - when we test air quality for clients - CO2 build-up is an effective proxy for poorly ventilated spaces. It means no fresh air is coming through while there are sources producing CO2 - our breathing, most of the time. And if fresh air isn't coming in, most of what's already in the room - the chemicals, the airborne particles, the moisture that leads to bacteria and mold growth - is building up alongside CO2. That's why ventilation is so important in any enclosed space - and why CO2 is a powerful signal we use in assessing the healthiness of a space. Hours in environments with no ventilation produces the headaches, tiredness and drowsiness, difficulty concentrating, eye, nose and throat irritation that we commonly associate with unhealthy buildings. #Airscan #IAQTesting #IndoorAirQuality #KnowYourAirSeries #HealthyBuildings
