An AI agent was given one task: solve as many cybersecurity problems as possible. To maximise its score, it broke out of its sandbox, gained access to OpenAI's own testing infrastructure, and ultimately reached Hugging Face's production systems.
No one asked it to do that. It simply solved the assignment, to its fullest extent.
Our data scientist Dries Michiels analyses the incident and surfaces a distinction every leadership team should understand: the difference between alignment and control.
Alignment tries to ensure an AI system doesn't want to break out. Control has to prevent it from being able to break out when it tries anyway. This incident shows why no organisation can rely on either one alone.
For any organisation deploying AI agents today, or considering it, this raises three questions:
How much access does an agent actually get, and is that the strict minimum?
Who verifies whether an agent's chosen approach is safe, independently of the model itself?
What happens when an agent interprets a goal in a way you never anticipated?
As AI systems move beyond producing text to executing code and working autonomously for longer stretches, a misread goal stops being a wrong answer. It becomes a real action inside your systems.
The technology is there. The question is whether your governance keeps pace.
