🚨 New report: “The EU CBAM’s Real Impact on India”
India’s exposure to the CBAM is substantial if one considers the average emission intensity of its steel industry.
However, the country’s steel industry is highly heterogeneous — from carbon-intensive coal-based DRI to much cleaner gas-based DRI and scrap-EAF routes. Looking more granularly, the picture changes dramatically.
👩💻Based on our updated CBAM Simulator, we found that:
1️⃣ Taking into account optimisations made by exporters and rising EU market prices, total CBAM costs may drop from €762 million to only €79 million.
2️⃣ If new low-emission capacity is deployed, the impact could turn into a net profit of €44 million.
3️⃣ There are nuances across product types. However, for most exports, we identified Indian steel plants with emission intensity levels low enough to gain from the CBAM. Other criteria such as geographical location, readiness for CBAM reporting and new anti-circumvention rules, still leave significant low-emission manufacturing capacity such as ArcelorMittal’s Hazira plant to remain competitive in EU markets.
