A cockpit pilot feels the aircraft. A drone operator feels nothing.
A cockpit pilot gets constant physical feedback — airframe vibration, g-forces, the aircraft leaning into a turn. In a ground control station, all vestibular cues are lost. Every cue about the aircraft has to be read on a screen or heard over comms — the same two channels already carrying the flight path, sensor feeds, datalink and radio. Nothing reaches the body.
It gets worse over a long mission:
⚠️Vigilance degrades within 15–30 minutes of monitoring — as little as 5 under high load
⚠️Nearly 40% of pilots miss a critical audio alarm when the channel is already full
⚠️When something collapses, the operator is pulled back in by surprise, with no warning build-up
Tellingly, ~54% of UAS accidents trace back to human factors.
There's one channel a control station never uses: touch. Graduated vibration restores the physical feedback the operator lost — improving flight accuracy by ~40%, and arriving up to 45 ms faster than visual.
The warnings are already there. The problem is that the operators cannot feel them.
