Most people think "Peppol" and immediately think e-invoicing. Fair enough: that's the mandatory piece, and it's what got the network built. But the Peppol network was designed to carry an entire business document flow, not just the invoice at the end of it.
Here is what else moves through Peppol today:
➡️ Invoice Response & Message Level Response (MLR): structured feedback confirming an invoice was received and accepted (or rejected, with a reason), replacing the endless "did you get my invoice?" email chains.
➡️ Orders & Order Responses: a buyer sends a purchase order, the supplier confirms, rejects or amends it. Full order-to-invoice automation, no manual re-entry on either side.
➡️ Catalogues & Punch Out: suppliers publish their product catalogues electronically; buyers browse and order directly from procurement platforms.
➡️ Despatch Advice: an electronic notice of what's actually being shipped, matched automatically against the order and the invoice. Useful for anyone managing logistics or 3-way matching!
➡️ Self-billing Invoices & Credit Notes: for sectors where the buyer issues the invoice on behalf of the supplier (common in specific procurement models).
Put together, this is the real promise of Peppol: one network, one set of standards covering the full commercial document lifecycle (from purchase order to payment confirmation) between any two connected businesses in 30+ countries.
If your product only thinks about Peppol as "the invoicing mandate", you might be looking at a smaller piece of a much bigger interoperability layer.
