Identifying and classifying NCAP-style scenarios in real-world driving requires more than matching an event to a predefined category.
On paper, scenarios have clear definitions. On the road, speeds and trajectories vary, surrounding traffic interferes, and similar situations can develop in very different ways.
A key part of our analysis was therefore identifying not only the scenario itself, but also the robustness layers around it: glare, night-time illumination, infrastructure clutter, and partial obscuration or obstruction.
These conditions add context to the event and help reveal what makes a scenario more challenging for an ADAS system. They move the analysis beyond “Did the scenario occur?” toward a more important question: “How robustly does the system perform when real-world complexity increases?” 🤔
Controlled definitions are essential. Real-world complexity is where robustness is truly tested. 🤝
