Pitching technical refactoring to a CFO gets you a "maybe next fiscal year".
Pitching the exact same initiative as liberated capacity gets you a green light.
Most boardrooms hear "tech debt" and see an unnecessary cost center. Meanwhile, adding AI to a broken leacy stack only creates chaos faster.
If you want buy-in for modernization, stop pitching code cleanup. Start translating tech into executive value:
1. To the CFO: frame it as capacity liberation.
✖️ Don't say: "We need to modernize staging"
✅ Say: "Legacy drag drains engineering productivity. Automating repetitive tasks recovers 10-15% of our team's capacity, reallocating pre-funded time straight into product development without adding headcount."
2. The CEO: frame it as market velocity.
✖️ Don't say: "We need clean architecture"
✅ Say: "Our legacy stack acts as a speed limit on strategy. Modernizing removes release friction, cutting our time-to-market in half to capture revenue faster than competitors."
Modernizing isn't an IT project. It's a commercial strategy.
