When we think about information security, we often think about ISO 27001, governance, risk management, awareness, firewalls, EDR, or vulnerability management. But one of the most impactful security controls on the internet is maintained by a non-profit. According to TechnologyChecker, 98.6% of human web traffic is encrypted, and around 59% of identifiable TLS certificates are issued by Let's Encrypt. Take a moment to think about that. Let's Encrypt has fundamentally changed the web by making TLS certificates free, automated, and accessible to everyone. From hobby projects to enterprise environments, millions of websites rely on it every single day. As security professionals, we often ask organisations to invest in protecting their own environment. But security is also about supporting the ecosystem we all depend on. Without initiatives like Let's Encrypt, the internet would simply be a less secure place. Being in control isn't about controlling everything. It's about understanding your dependencies and managing them responsibly.
