The job market isn't splitting between people who work harder and people who don't. It's splitting between people who use AI and people who don't, and the pay gap between the two is already measurable.
PwC's 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer found that roles built around AI skills carry a wage premium of 62 percent over roles that aren't, up from 57 percent a year earlier. That gap isn't evenly spread either, which we'll get into in a future post, but the direction is already clear.
Two people can hold the exact same job title and be standing on opposite sides of that split. The title stopped being the signal a while ago.
