This spring, we hosted Robert Höglund to discuss corporate climate ambition. Two insights stood out.
1/ There are 3 different opinions to how market interventions should count towards net zero target fulfilment
✔️ The Permissive Patch: most interventions are target-fulfilling (e.g., The Climate Pledge)
✔️ The Negotiated Path: some interventions are target-fulfilling under strict rules (e.g., SBTi, ISO 14060)
✔️ The Contribution Path: no interventions are target-fulfilling, they are just contributions (e.g. New Climate Institute)
2/ Net zero targets are conditional
👉 Unconditional: what companies can deliver through its own decisions (under current policies)
👉 Conditional: what companies can not deliver alone, but dependes on policy, infrastructure, markets, innovation..
