One card. One PAN. One rail.
For most card programmes, that was the whole architecture. One payment application. One network. One path to settlement.
It worked. It also meant that every new product needed a new card, and every new card needed another reason to sit in someone's wallet.
But why should a card be locked into a single path?
With a multi-PAN, multi-application architecture, the same card carries several payment identities, and chooses between them at the moment of the transaction.
→ Domestic schemes
→ An international scheme when travelling
→ A closed-loop network for meal, mobility or employee benefits
→ A dedicated account for corporate spend
Same card. Different rails. Different pins.
For the cardholder, nothing changes. They tap.
For the issuer, everything does.
Products that once required separate cards now live on one. New services launch without a re-issue. Dependency on a single network drops. And routing becomes a decision made per transaction, not per programme.
The card stops being a credential pointing at an account.
It becomes a platform.
At ByQwest, we are building the infrastructure for issuers who want to move past one card, one rail.
Because the future is not more cards in more wallets.
It is one card with more ways to pay.
