Europe can mandate the digital euro. It can’t mandate the technology into existence.
For consumers, using it will be a choice. For the institutions expected to distribute it and the businesses expected to accept it, being ready won’t be.
That makes the digital euro less an ECB initiative than an infrastructure project for the entire European payments ecosystem.
Most European stacks were built around commercial-bank deposits, cards and SEPA. Not for central-bank money that has to move online and offline, through banking apps and wallets, across cards and new acceptance channels, alongside deposits, stablecoins and tokenised value - and between new rails and decades-old cores.
The ECB can issue the digital euro and define the scheme. What it can’t do is rebuild every bank’s ledger, modernise every processor, or make years of technical debt disappear. That work lands on the institutions required to distribute it.
A legal obligation is not a technical capability.
At ByQwest, we didn’t wait for issuance to start building. Multi-currency accounts and wallets. Real-time authorisation. Physical, virtual and digital cards across fiat and digital assets. Tokenisation. Clearing and settlement. Multi-rail routing. All live.
We’re not claiming to process a currency that doesn’t exist yet. We’re saying that when institutions are required to support it, they won’t be starting from zero.
For most of the market, digital-euro readiness is a roadmap. For us, the building blocks are already running.
Europe is building the currency and the scheme around it. We’ve built the infrastructure institutions will need to plug into it.
