Even when #brainstimulation is delivered in exactly the same way, the brainโs response can vary substantially from one moment to the next ย - limiting the reliability of both research and therapeutic applications.
A new study published in Brain Stimulation Journal, using data hosted by EBRAINS, shows that the brainโs ongoing activity before stimulation can help predict this variability.
Analysing more than 10,000 stimulations, researchers found that whole-brain activity patterns predicted responses better than local recordings. Selecting specific pre-stimulation brain states reduced response variability by up to 24%.
The findings suggest that timing stimulation according to the brainโs ongoing state could make neuromodulation therapies more precise, consistent and reliable, demonstrating at the same time the value of #EBRAINS open #datasets for large-scale, reproducible neuroscience.
