Can the injected dose in SPECT be cut without losing image quality?

Reducing radiation dose in preclinical SPECT lowers photon counts, increasing noise and degrading image quality. This presents a real limitation in longitudinal studies, where animals are scanned repeatedly over time.Â

In this study, researchers from Ghent University investigated whether deep learning models pretrained on PET data could denoise low-dose SPECT scans, comparing two architectures: a U-Net and a denoising diffusion probabilistic model.Â

The Îł-CUBE (SPECT) was used to scan mice with two tracers at 10%, 25%, and 50% of standard counts. This allowed direct comparison of the denoised low-count images against full-count reference scans, evaluating image quality and tracer uptake accuracy.Â
