Every multi-location brand I speak to has one location that just runs better. Same menu, same training as every other store, but better numbers, a happier team, calmer shifts.
Ask why, and the answer is almost always a name. It's down to the manager.
For years the instinct has been to fix this by training harder, taking whatever that manager does and teaching it to everyone else.
I don't think that works. A lot of what makes a great manager great isn't something you can hand over in a workshop. It's the ability to look at ten signals at once and know instantly which one matters right now.
Some people have that instinct. Others won't, no matter how many hours of training you put into them.
So teaching everyone to think like your best manager was never going to be the whole answer. What actually helps is building a system that points every manager's attention at what matters, so nobody has to rely on instinct they don't have.
