🤖 AI agents are becoming part of the telecoms network architecture. But where exactly do they fit?
As telco network moves towards more autonomous operations, AI agents could play several roles: operating within network functions, supporting network management, and interacting with network capabilities on behalf of applications and users.
And there’s another interesting development: AI agents operating outside the network will increasingly need ways to interact with it.
That’s where network exposure becomes particularly important.
Telecoms networks can expose capabilities such as location, differentiated connectivity and network slicing to applications through APIs. These exposure mechanisms could also support agent-specific functions such as discovery, authentication and authorisation.
🔹 And where does MCP fit?
MCP servers could provide an agent-friendly layer for network services exposed to applications.
Rather than simply replacing APIs, MCP can sit above them, turning lower-level API operations into higher-level tools that an AI agent can understand and invoke to achieve a goal.
As AI agents become more capable, the telecoms challenge won't only be how to use AI to operate the network.
It will also be how the network safely exposes its capabilities to AI agents, while maintaining clear authorisation, security and control.
