Segments.ai was founded in Leuven by Otto Debals and Bert De Brabandere, both PhD graduates from KU Leuven. The company built a data labeling and annotation platform for computer vision and ML teams, addressing the need for high-quality training data infrastructure.

Segments.ai became the first Belgian startup accepted into Y Combinator, joining the Winter 2021 cohort (W21). This marked a milestone for the Belgian startup ecosystem and gave the company access to international networks and capital.

The company posted 1936% revenue growth in the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 Belgium 2025. In 2025, Segments.ai was acquired by Uber, representing a successful exit for the founders and early investors.
