Twipe was founded in 2011 by Danny Lein, starting from a project to render a PDF of Flemish daily De Standaard on an iPad. From that origin the company built a SaaS platform for replica and enhanced digital editions of newspapers, then expanded into reader analytics, personalisation, and editorial decision-support tools. The platform powers around 8 million digital edition downloads per month.
The product line includes Replica Editions (2011), NextGen Edition launched with Ouest-France in 2013, EngageReaders analytics co-developed with KU Leuven academics in 2015, the JAMES personalisation engine created with The Times and Sunday Times in 2018, Modular News Apps from 2019, and an Editions SDK launched with Le Parisien in 2021. EngageReaders and JAMES were both supported by grants from Google's Digital News Initiative fund, the EngageReaders work in partnership with Mediahuis.
The company is headquartered at Gaston Geenslaan 8 in Leuven and employs around 50 people representing more than 20 nationalities. Twipe is bootstrapped with no reported Venture Capital rounds. Its customer base spans Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, the UK, the Nordic countries, and the United States, including The Telegraph, Daily Mail, Le Monde, De Standaard, Stuttgarter Zeitung, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Twipe also organises the annual Twipe Digital Growth Summit in Brussels, focused on subscription and reader-revenue strategies. The company became ISO 27001:2022 certified in 2025 and won the INMA Triggers award in 2023 and a Flanders Trade and Investment Export Lion in 2022.
Danny Lein - ceo, founder

Danny Lein, CEO of Twipe, discusses creating a tablet app designed to offer a "Leanback user experience" that presents newspapers in a publication-optimized format rather than as a continuous information stream like websites. He explains that tablet app readers consume content differently than website visitors, typically spending about 30 minutes reading in the evening after scanning articles in the morning, whereas website readers visit multiple times daily for short periods.

Danny Lein discusses Twipe's digital publishing platform that enables newspapers to publish on smartphones and tablets across iOS, Android, and Windows 8 devices, emphasizing their tablet-optimized interface with full-screen images and column layouts as distinguishing features. He describes speaking at the media port about integrating HTML5 into publishing applications and the benefits and limitations of doing so, noting significant audience interest in this topic.
