Overview
Jo Lernout co-founded Lernout and Hauspie Speech Products in 1987 alongside Pol Hauspie in Ieper, West Flanders. The company developed speech recognition software at a time when the technology was novel and the market opportunity was considered large. L&H grew aggressively through acquisitions and partnerships and attracted significant international investor capital.
The company collapsed in 2001 following the exposure of an accounting fraud scandal involving falsified revenues. The collapse was one of the most dramatic corporate failures in Belgian business history. Despite the outcome, L&H's dispersed talent pool seeded numerous subsequent ventures across the Belgian tech ecosystem.
