Yesterday I joined "Business Bites: How to Make Your Customers Fans of Your Brand", organized by Stad Gent — an evening session packed with interesting and hands-on insights. There was a presentation by Lieselot Huysman (Fluo), followed by a panel with Lieselot, Monica Van Huylenbroeck (Teamleader) and Thomas Kindermans (skincare), moderated by Vicky Van Daele. A few things that stuck with me: - Know what you stand for — and what you don't. Try this exercise: imagine a press article about your company five years from now. What would be in it? - Listening is an important skill. The brand is shaped by what customers say. Negative feedback isn't fun, but it's something you can actually act on — treat it as a gift. And if customers go quiet? Don't wait. Reach out to them, especially to the ones who haven't said a word in a while, and simply ask how they're doing. - Build with your community, not just for it. Co-creating with customers can make sure that you add real value, not assumed value. - Consider organizing your own event. Not for the event itself, but for the community of advocates it builds around you, for the "side stories" it creates. - Flyering still works. Per person reached, it's one of the most cost-effective local channels — so consider yourself warned, Ghent shop owners: expect a lot more people at your door with flyers. - We also walked away with a simple 5-step elevator pitch framework — sharp enough to actually use tomorrow (see attached slide). - Straight from the panel: reach out to local journalists directly, they're always hunting for stories, no need to feel like you're bothering them. So — Ghent journalists, brace yourselves too. A room full of newly motivated entrepreneurs just got your number!
