The question is whether the organization will be able to provide a complete and reliable record of how AI contributed to those decisions, or discover gaps in its evidence only when the auditors start asking questions. Auditability therefore needs to be considered as part of AI governance and designed into the process from the beginning. Several challenges can otherwise make AI-assisted decisions difficult to audit: ✅ Fragmented evidence: the AI output, analyst actions and final outcome may sit across AML tools, case-management systems and technical logs, making a complete audit trail difficult to retrieve. ✅ Model and system changes: changes in algorithmic logic, thresholds or functionality may affect how an output is produced. An audit therefore needs to refer to how the system actually operated at the time of the decision, rather than how its current version operates. ✅ Human intervention: systems may retain the final outcome without showing whether the analyst accepted, challenged or overrode the AI output, leaving an important part of the decision trail invisible. ✅ Vendor dependency: organizations should not discover during an audit that critical evidence is held only by the AI vendor or is no longer accessible. The practical solution is to establish a clear audit trail before it turns into another fire to put out: define what evidence must be captured, where it will be retained, for how long and how it can be retrieved. A practical test is simple: pick an AI-assisted AML case from several months ago and try to reconstruct it using the evidence available today.
