Overview
EcoReFibre explores AI-enabled sorting and advanced fibre-recovery methods to recycle post-consumer fibreboard back into fibreboards and novel building products, closing the material loop and reducing dependence on virgin wood. The project is organized around work packages covering waste provision, smart extraction of secondary materials, recycling into products, sustainability and health & safety, and dissemination.

- Recovered fibres are returning to production in new MDF and HDF panels. In laboratory and industrial trials carried out by SONAE ARAUCO and Homanit GmbH & Co. KG, recovered fibres were brought back into panel production. This represents one of EcoReFibre’s key results. Here is what the trials achieved: 🔹 At laboratory scale, new panels were produced with 15% and 25% fibres recovered from post-consumer fibreboards. 🔹 Industrial thin HDF incorporated up to 15% recycled fibres without affecting line productivity, surface quality
- There is more than one route for recovering fibres from wood waste. Developed by Institut für Holztechnologie Dresden gemeinnützige GmbH (IHD) the mTMP process, a moisture modifying thermomechanical pulping technology, defibrates post-consumer solid wood and fibreboard for new fibreboards and other applications. Within the project, the mTMP technology progressed from batch processing to a continuous process. It produced high-quality fibres with a size and type distribution comparable to virgin wood fibres, using input containing
- From sorting to material recovery How fibres and fines can be recovered from post-consumer fibreboard and brought back into the cycle? Developed by Dieffenbacher, the wet and dry processing routes were demonstrated within the project: 🔹 The wet process recovers clean fibres from post-consumer fibreboard chips, making them suitable for new fibreboard production. 🔹 The dry process separates fines with the right particle size for particleboard applications, while coatings are removed into a dedicated stream. Together, these

- New Results in Brief and Factsheet! ♻️ How can post-consumer fibreboard be separated from mixed wood waste and prepared for recycling? Dieffenbacher has developed an innovative multistage sorting line that combines cleaning, optical sorting and machine learning to recover: 🪵 Solid wood with 95% purity 🔄 Fibreboard with 97% purity More than 100 tonnes of mixed wood waste were processed, demonstrating the industrial relevance of the approach. By creating cleaner and more usable material fractions, sorting opens the way to
- How can post-consumer fibreboard become secondary raw material for new fibreboards? EcoReFibre has published its first Results in Brief and Project Innovation Factsheet focusing on prediction modelling. Explore post-consumer fibreboard waste flows in Europe through the publications and the open-access tool developed by Institut technologique FCBA and L'Ecole Supérieure du Bois. The model estimates fibreboard waste volumes up to 2050, and supports better planning for recycling, investment and policy. 📥 Click below to read the
