Howest - Ba. Industrieel Productontwerpen alumnus Julián Ortega Martínez wins the WONDER Young Talent Award! At the opening of the WONDER Creativity Festival in Kortrijk, Julián received the WONDER Young Talent Award by Nationale Loterij for his graduation project HEAL, developed during his internship in collaboration with BRIGHT Products. HEAL is a hands-free, solar-powered lighting solution for medical responders working in emergency situations, refugee camps and off-grid areas without reliable electricity. We had the chance to sit down with Focus WTV, who came to hear the story straight from us and from Johan, the swimmer at the heart of this whole project. It was such a special moment to see his experience with the prosthesis shared so widely. The project has also been picked up by SudInfo and EngineeringNet, which has been amazing to see. Getting this kind of visibility helps us push toward our real goal: making this design accessible to more swimmers who need it. Aan het begin van het nieuwe academiejaar zet Howest één van haar drie belangrijke pijlers in de kijker: goesting in ondernemen. Dat Pannaball het verhaal achter die pijler mee mocht vertellen, vinden we dan ook best bijzonder. Het afgelopen jaar hebben we vooral ontdekt hoeveel er komt kijken bij het uitbouwen van een idee tot een echt product en bedrijf. We hebben enorm veel geleerd over productontwikkeling, ondernemen en alles wat daarbij komt kijken, en minstens evenveel van elkaar. Dat verloopt uiteraard niet altijd volgens plan. Deadlines verschuiven, prototypes veranderen en sommige dingen moeten gewoon opnieuw. Maar met genoeg goesting blijven we vooruitgaan. 😉 Bedankt HOWEST Hogeschool West-Vlaanderen om Pannaball deel te laten uitmaken van dit verhaal. Industrieel Productontwerpen) and Occupational Therapy (Howest Ergotherapie) students have won a national Dyson Award with their project DIY Swimming Prosthetic! A fantastic recognition for an innovative design combining social impact, user-centred design and technology. Together with BOAS vzw and Johan Dumortier, a below-the-knee amputee, they developed an affordable swimming prosthetic specifically designed for use in the water. IPO and Occupational Therapy combined their expertise in product design, engineering and 3D printing with comfort, functionality and user needs. After multiple prototypes and pool tests, the result is a lightweight, customisable and portable prosthetic that costs less than €100 to produce.
