QuotedPaperFoam@paperfoam🌱 BRAVE takes another important step towards a sustainable alternative to EPS packaging. Since May 2026, MEAM-Microwave Energy Applications Management has officially joined the BRAVE project consortium, bringing valuable expertise in microwave processing technology to our mission of developing a biologically recyclable alternative to EPS (expanded polystyrene) packaging. Following several promising initial trials over the past months using PaperFoam pallets and MEAM's microwave technology, we were excited to meet recently at their facility in Belgium together with Innograaf and MEAM NL B.V. This latest test round focused on more complex geometries and an updated particle formulation. The outcome was encouraging on multiple levels: ✅ Stronger collaboration and alignment between project partners ✅ New insights into the complex interaction between process parameters, including particle formulation, fill quantities, mould venting, pressure build-up, and processing conditions ✅ The formation of a first early EPF (Expanded PaperFoam) corner piece While there is still work ahead, this first cautiously formed corner piece represents an exciting milestone. Our ambition remains clear: to develop a sustainable, recyclable and compostable alternative to EPS for protecting products such as furniture, heavy electronics, and the ventilation systems of our project partner Vaventis. The EPS replacing packaging will be built from industrial starch, will have a seriously low carbon footprint, and will even be home compostable. So no longer use of fossil materials, no littering of plastic particles, and ultimate protection. A special thank you to Thomas Hofman and the MEAM team for the warm welcome and excellent support during the trials. We look forward to continuing this collaboration and further improving this promising material and process technology. We would like to thank EFRO Oost 2021-2027 as well for supporting the BRAVE project and making these developments possible.
