• Last week I attended European Association for the Study of Diabetes e.V. (EASD) in Milan, the European congress on diabetes, both type 1 and type 2. With over 16,000 attendees, it’s the largest diabetes meeting in the world! It’s fascinating to see how far the new combined technologies already go: a CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitor) measures the glucose level, and an insulin pump automatically delivers the dose the patient needs. This is a big shift that requires significant education and planning to effectively operationalize. For years, much of the conversation around T1D screening has centered on whether we should screen. The more interesting question now is: What happens when we do? A screening program is so much more than a blood test. It needs a pathway for all the steps that follow: * Confirming positive results, * Communicating the diagnosis, * Providing stage-appropriate education and support, * Monitoring disease progression, and * Connecting people with appropriate treatment and clinical trials. And it needs to be accessible to everyone—not just people who happen to have a family history of T1D and access to a diabetes specialty center. That’s why I’m particularly excited about the work we’re doing in California through the T1D Screening Collaborative. We have an opportunity to build something that goes beyond finding people earlier. We can build a system that makes earlier diagnosis truly matter. This next chapter of T1D #screening is getting very interesting. What do you think needs to be in place before we can truly make population-wide T1D screening work?
