Typically you configure certain approval flows based on the initial requirements when you implement the solutions. Changing those afterwards is always a mess. Maybe you want to adapt the approval flow to work different for risky access vs normal access. What if external employees should get a different flow vs internal? Or what if you onboard a new application and it needs a completely different chain for approval that doesn't match anything else you have already configured? We centralized the approval chains and made them rule bases with priority. Every request flows through the same funnel and get's the approval flow based on the first rule that hits the final rule will always catch anything else. (yes, this may remind you of firewall rules)+1

In most projects I was involved they were either done to tick a compliance box every x time or not done at all because it was to much of a burden to set it up or chase people that don't reply. Doing it time based also means you always get the questions for all the permissions at one. So people say yes to all of it. We still offer that capability if you really need it for compliance. But we also offer the option to set it up rule and event based. Privilege acces reviewed every 90 days. The clock starts ticking when you get the access approved and resets every time you get it re-approved. Each explicitely granted permission has its own timer based on the rule that matches. Besides that we also do event based certifications. Someone moved division, a role has been changed, an emergency access was used. Add coverage dashboards on top of that to tell you what permissions and objects are covered or not and you get into real continuous compliance that will make your auditor very happy. Every IGA vendor is racing toward continuous compliance. Good — they should be. But “continuous” isn’t a checkbox.
