- Would you hand a ten-year-old a real share of Disney? A Belgian senator got his first share at ten, a stake in the Ghent tram, and cheerfully rode “his” tram for the rest of his life. A few thoughts on why the age you buy your first stock might matter more than which stock it is. Curious where you land: too young, or exactly right? #financialliteracy #investing
- What a week! Young Early Starters - YES and Oscar’s first trip to New York City! Before heading to the City That Never Sleeps, I had my annual injection of art, culture, politics, books and business at the Financial Times Weekend Festival, one of my favorite events (a reflection on that in a next post). Then it was down to business with my colleague Monica Marpole-Bird and YES’s Oscar. They presented at Finovate Fall 2026 to a large audience in a very large hall, and we ran a booth too. - Very much looking forward to heading to the USA with Oscar and Monica Marpole-Bird. It will be Oscar’s first time crossing the ocean, but definitely not his last: we are attending and pitching at FinovateFall in New York this September. Excited to take the next step — and to see what Oscar makes of New York! #FinovateFall #edtech #fintech

- Last weekend in Ostend, a trapeze artist swung a little girl out over the whole crowd. Not the same as investing, I know, but it triggered something. What those performers radiate is earned confidence, years of practice made to look easy. And that turns out to be the real story of the gender gap: women may actually be quietly the better investors, they’re just less often shown that the skill is theirs. My new piece: 👇 #financialliteracy #investing #education #gendergap
- When I started investing, few people talked about it. Last week a children’s bookshop owner asked me about stocks. Over nearly forty years I’ve watched investing go from a niche for the older and better-off to something an eighteen-year-old and a children bookshop owner both do.
