A new systematic review by Cagla Kettner (née Fadillioglu) and colleagues maps how stability is currently assessed in running research. This one is particularly close to home for me. During my PhD, we explored whether dynamic stability could be quantified during running using a single trunk-mounted IMU. At the time, much of the stability literature focused on walking, and “stability” was often used as an umbrella term for very different concepts. That early work ultimately helped form the scientific foundation for dynamic stability as one of Runeasi’s core running metrics. Today, dynamic stability is routinely applied in the field: from identifying compensatory patterns in injured runners to validating innovative running shoe concepts such as the On CloudRunner3. Why this review matters: stability isn’t one thing. Robustness, variability, consistency and other approaches can capture different aspects of how a runner controls movement, and they don’t necessarily tell the same story. More clarity around what we measure, how we measure it, and what it means is an important step toward translating stability research into useful insights for runners and clinicians. Great to see the field continuing to evolve, and nice to see some of our earlier work included in the review. 👏 Congrats to the authors on pulling together a complex research landscape.
