Pol Hauspie co-founded Lernout and Hauspie Speech Products in 1987 alongside Jo Lernout in Ieper, West Flanders. The company built speech recognition technology and became one of Europe's most closely watched tech companies during the late 1990s.

L&H's aggressive growth strategy and accounting irregularities ultimately led to the company's collapse in 2001 after revenues were found to be falsified. The scandal remains one of the most significant corporate fraud cases in Belgian history. Despite the failure, the talent that passed through L&H went on to seed other ventures across the Belgian tech landscape.
